A slum of a movie by J. A. Eyon
There are a couple dismal possible explanations for the talented Rose Byrne’s presence in this piece of filth: (1) This was the best of the offers she was getting from American producers at the time. (2) This was her own choice over better offers.

So she found herself in a supporting role in a film where a Jewish-American writer (Dynlan) cowers before a raging black writer (the robotic Snoop Dogg) for an hour and a half before the way-too-predictable ending. You won’t get any background into the characters. After all, they’re principally symbols. Seemingly, insight derives from the situation: two writers meet in a decaying tenament, discussing (if that’s what it can be called) their thoughts (if that’s what they can be called) which provokes a lot of racial friction. Then there’s this white chick (I think at one point she says she’s Jewish) who comes between.

If you are in anyway sane and rational, and you can live without seeing absolutely everything Rose Byrne did, then avoid this like a rat-infested tenement.

This film makes Rose’s TWO HANDS seem palatable in comparison — altho, Rose is much prettier here.

Clash Of The Tenants… by Michael Bolts
Dylan McDermott (The Practice, Where Sleeping Dogs Lie) plays Harry Lesser a novelist who is the only person living in an abandoned tenant building. His last novel flopped big time but people say his first one was a classic. So, he’s in his apartment, writing a new novel which he thinks will boost his career back up and become a big success. The landlord Levenspiel, played by Seymour Cassel (Royal Tenenbaums, The Crew) is letting him complete his novel, then he is out so they can demolish the tenant buildins to the ground. While doing his novel, Lesser comes upon another man in the building typing his own novel as well…..Willie Spearmint, played by Snoop Dogg (Starsky & Hutch, Bones). Willie goes to Lesser for inspiration on his novel usually which ends up with the 2 of them clashing at one each other. Willie has a white woman for a girlfriend named Irene, played by Rose Byrne (Troy, Wicker Park). Lesser becomes romantically involved with Irene and Lesser plans to complete his novel and leave with Irene. This only complicates more when Lesser tells Willie about the 2 of them. Then it gets crazier with the 2 of ruining each others lives. McDermott & Snoop are OK, so’s the movie and most of the time the situations are predictable and I knew what was going to happen which leaves you bored but it’s still pretty interesting and watchable. Snooooop!

Angry Black Man by Pamela S. Noud
If you like watching the archetypal Angry Black Man (hostile & volatile), then this movie is for you. What a loathsome character Willie Spearmint is… juxtaposed against the sensitive, thoughtful, generous Lesser. Willie has a colossal chip on his shoulder, evident fr. the 2 characters’ 1st meeting, when Lesser walks in from behind on Willie typing away, and Willie greets L with only unabashed indignation. Willie exudes this indignation and hatefulness every other scene. On more than one occasion, he asks Lesser for advice on his novel, then goes off on Lesser like a madman in reaction to L’s conscientious & painstaking reply. Willie is an ingrate and a USER. VERY unpleasant to watch.

Great movie, must see! by komiq
Harry Lesser (Dylan McDermott), is a statutory tenant who writes on the top floor of an abandoned building, writing a novel which is taking him 10 years to complete. Willie Spearmint (Snopp Dogg), is a reloutionist writer who moves into the building, uninvited, to write his book as well. The movie is slow at some points, but having you wonder what will happen next. I can watch the movie again and again.

A Microscopic Examination of Urban Life and the Writer’s Mind by Grady Harp
THE TENANTS began as a 1971 short novel by the now deceased Bernard Malamud - writer/philosopher - examining the conflicts between Jews and African Americans in the incendiary atmosphere of Brooklyn at the time the book was written. As a novel the story was gut wrenchingly real: as transcribed into a screenplay by novices David Diamond and Danny Green (who also directs) it is more of a cerebral dissertation that gradually erupts into action in the final moments.

Harry Lesser (Dylan McDermott) is a Jewish novelist with one book under his belt but currently attempting to finish his ‘newest’ book ten years into the writing. Convinced that he must complete the novel in the same environment where it was started: he is the sole tenant in a condemned Brooklyn tenement owned by Levinspiel (Seymour Cassel) who constantly tries to ‘buy out’ Harry’s lease so that the filthy dilapidated building can be demolished. Into this atmosphere enters another Black militant quasi-anti-Semitic writer Willie Spearmint (Snoop Dogg) whom Harry befriends, hides, and offers help to the nascent novelist’s attempt to write about the death of all white people. Harry’s attempts to help Willie lead to conflict, not the least of which is Harry’s meeting Willie’s girlfriend, the white Jewish Irene Bell (Rose Byrne) at a less than friendly gathering of Willie’s militant black brothers and sisters. Willie and Irene are on the skids and Harry gradually falls in love with Irene and they plan to leave New York as soon as Harry finishes his novel. When Willie hears of the assignation and is further critiqued by Harry, Willie explodes and begins the downward descent of not only a delicate friendship but also a competition between writers. The ending ‘reveals the slippery nature of the human condition, and the human capacity for violence and undoing’.

The actors do their best with a script that is a bit awkward but despite scripted lines that border on preaching they create believable characters. The cinematography enhances the story, keeping the mood dank and dense and primarily confined to the condemned building. The musical score appropriately makes use of the solo jazz trumpet and blues piano to underline the tension and isolation of each of these groundless characters. Though it takes some patience to make it through the cerebral ramblings, the film in the end is worth watching. At least it attempts to recreate Malamud’s bizarre look at life in the big city. True To life in that part of the USA by
this is an excellent movie with an excellent message, it is about normal young men in east los angeles and they are good kids but one of their friends begins to sell drugs because he is poor. his gets involved with a murderous drug dealing scum bag which cost him his life. his friends all have each of their own problems like most youths do. good film about becoming a man and understanding what is important in life.

Road Dogz by
I caught the end of this movie when HBO had it’s Latino month and was very impressed so I had to buy it to view it from the start. So glad I did.

It reminded me of a Latino version of Boyz In The Hood and it was a welcome addition to my video library until my daughter decide to add it to her library! Now I have to buy another.

Funny, touching, moving, with a lesson for all.

great movie, awesome acting by O. Rios
Road Dogz come off like Boyz in Da Hood, but it isn’t.

here, 3 friends who are so close, they are more like brothers living and growing up in the barrio of Los Angeles.

Danny is the tough, machismo, grew up on his own cause his mom left them and his dad never cared much about him. Alonso is the playboy, “certified pimp” like he says, and Raymo (Clifton Collins Jr.) is trying to be the man of him family. Without his dad, he needs money to pay the rent and help him mom out, so he starts to sell drugs with Gramps, who has taken over as the drug man in the area.

then there is Joe, who has just gotten out from serving time for selling drugs. he’s out, and trying to keep clean and in many ways, is like a father figure to Danny and Raymo.

Road Dogz follows Danny, Raymo and Alonso, three “brothers” who hustle by playing basketball for money.
Alonso meets a girl, Chesby, and falls in love with her, gets her pregnant and then has to marry her.

Danny, who has abandend by his mom, is now in the trouble because his girlfriend Lucy is leaving to New York for school.
He wants to make something of his life, so he finds a job to try and get his dad off his back, but nothing seems to be working out the way he intended it to.

then Raymo, who got into the drug thing to make money to help his mom out gets popped by two guys for all his money and drugs.
Raymo, who is a real man and can’t take it that if he is going to get popped, he dosen’t want it to be in front of his mom, so he goes on not worrying.

Gramps, who the whole time is starting to fued with Joe, wants to get at Raymo for being jacked off his money and more importantly damaging his rep on the streets that he is soft, so he catches up with Raymo and threatens to kill him, but Raymo won’t budge and the deal ends there.

they hoop it up and win, and things all of a sudden are making sense, and then BAM, showdown between Raymo, Big Joe and Gramps.

Raymo is cut off by Gramps who pulls out a gun at him, and then walks around the corner and tells Gramps to squash everything.
one thing leads to another, and……

can’t give it away, you have to watch the movie.
it’s really a good movie, corny at times, but funny, good, and sad cause in the end, it’s all about life, growing up and moving on. things change, and really, that is the story of Road Dogz, and inbetween change, their is still that unity of friends being so close, they are like brothers.

great movie, i recomend.

Great Movie by

SORT OF A SECOND COMING OF ”BOYZ N THE HOOD” by MICHAEL TAYLOR
THREE LATINO FRIENDS FACE DIFFERENT OBSTACLES IN LOS ANGELES. GOOD ACTING AND A VERY VERY CONVINCING STORY PUTS THIS A CUT ABOVE MANY OF THE OTHER GANGSTA MOVIES THAT’RE CURRENTLY DOWN AT THE VIDEO STORE RIGHT NOW. THIS MIGHT EVEN BE ABLE TO COMPARE TO ”BOYZ N THE HOOD”, WHICH I CAN’T SAY FOR MANY OF THE OTHER HOOD MOVIES THAT’RE OUT TODAY. THIS IS DEFINITELY WORTH RENTING OR BETTER YET, WORTH OWNING. I ADVISE ALL HOOD MOVIE FANATICS TO GET THIS MOVIE THE NEXT TIME THEY GO TO A VIDEO STORE. YOU’LL BE VERY VERY SUPRISED LIKE I WAS.

NEVER THE TWAIN SHALL MEET… by Lawyeraau
In August of 1991, Gavin Cato, a black seven year old boy, was hit and killed by a car driven by a Hassidic man in the racially polarized neighborhood of Crown Heights, Brooklyn. Consequently, racial tensions bubbled over and riots broke out in that community over the incident, with looting and violence rampant. An Australian Hassidic man, having nothing to do with the car accident, was then stabbed to death in retaliation by Lemrick Nelson, a black man from the community. Animosity has always run high between Blacks and Hassidim in that Crown Heights community, the two groups that live side by side in Crown Heights, and it just took a tragic accident to have that cauldron of hatred bubble over into murder and mayhem.

This film is not about the incident that caused all hell to break loose. Based upon actual people and events, it is about the way that peacemakers in each of the two groups tried a joint grass roots approach to giving peace a chance. They reached out to male youths on both sides of the great divide. Their goal was to create cultural awareness and understanding through dialogue, music, and basketball games in hopes of bridging the chasm that existed between these two groups. Although the Hassidim and Blacks had lived side by side with each other for some time in Crown Heights, there was little mutual understanding and virtually no social interaction.

David Lazerson (Howie Mandel), author of “Switchblades and Skullcaps” and a member of the Hassidic community, is contacted by an emissary of the renowned Rebbe Schneerson of the Lubavitcher sect and asked to reach out to the Black community in the spirit of reconciliation. He agrees and reaches out to local Black activist and youth counselor, Richard Green (Mario Van Peebles). They join forces to try and maintain the peace and bridge some understanding between the two groups. They establishe Project Cure, a group comprised of both Black and Hassidic male youths. The film focuses on two of those youths, TJ (De Quan Henderson) and Yudi (Jeremy Blackman), and after a rocky start, an unexpected friendship forms between them. While some progress was made by Project Cure, the reality of Crown Heights today is that never the twain shall meet.

This is not one of Showtime’s best films. It is a self-conscious effort at best. Howie Mandel’s performance is embarrassing, and the viewer can spot his fake beard a mile away. Mario Van Peebles, however, gives a good performance, as does De Quan Henderson. It is Jeremy Blackman, however, who gives the standout performance in this film. Unfortunately, Jeremy Kagan’s heavy-handed direction results in a film so obviously preachy that it falls a bit flat, short of its intended mark.
